  • Let's get into the holiday spirit by going for a snowy hike at Seoraksan National Park and seeing holiday lights at the Garden of Morning Calm! First, we will go to Seoraksan and hike a 3.5 ~ 4 hour course perfect for a snowy, winter day. The trail will have some steep sections and stairs, and will likely be snowy and slippery. Crampons (metal spikes which you attach to your boots/shoes) will be necessary to hike on this trail. For those who get too cold or tired during the hike, there will be one spot along the trail where you can exit early. After the hike, will ride the bus to the Garden of Morning Calm to see their colorful holiday lights display. It should be a great way to spend a December day!

    Crampons:
Crampons are metal spikes which are worn over your boots/shoes (called 아이젠 in Korean) and are an essential part of winter hiking. They cost around 20,000 won for a decent pair, and can be found at E-mart, http://global.gmarket.co.kr/Home/Main, or at hiking trailheads. They will NOT be available at the trailhead, so please buy/borrow them in advance.

    Hike details:

Our hike will not take us up to any of Seoraksan's highest peaks, but we'll still encounter some rocky terrain and stairs. The hike will take 3.5-4 hours round-trip (not including time for lunch), but there will be a chance to exit the hike early (for anyone who is cold or tired). According to the national park website, our hike will cover a mix of moderate and intermediate terrain. The amount of snow on the trail will depend on the weather. Sometimes there is just a little snow, and sometimes there is a lot (this exact time last year, there was a lot of snow). It is important to be prepared for snow by bringing crampons.
