Organized under the theme ‘Garden of the Earth,’ the Suncheon Bay Garden Expo 2013 is a global festival to be held for six months from April 20 to October 20,2013 in Suncheon City of the Namdo region. Suncheonman (Suncheon Bay) is a coastal wetland registered on the Ramsar Convention. Korean photographers often select Suncheonman Bay as one of the best spots to watch sunsets in Korea.
The main expo site features various gardens like the World Garden, Flower Garden, Water Garden, Forest Garden, Theme Garden, Oriental Medicinal Herb Garden, and Play Garden. There is also a main performance stage and an outdoor performance stage. The World Garden showcases the traditional garden culture of ten countries in the world all in one site. The Oriental Medicinal Herb Garden highlights medicinal herbs that grow in the mountains, fields, and riverside. Various programs are organized at the nursery garden and hands-on experience center.

The arboretum features the Garden Trees Experience Center, a Korean Garden, the Namdo Forest Exploration Zone, Namdo Daraengi Garden, Royal Azalea Garden, and Native Plant Garden, offering various information and fun activities related to forests and gardens. At the Garden Trees Experience Center, visitors can see various garden plants used in other countries. The Korean Garden shows the essence of traditional Korean gardening.

The International Wetland Center is housed underground in an environment-friendly building so as to minimize the impact on the protected wetland and to be in harmony with the natural surroundings. The center has on exhibit materials related to various wetlands of the world categorized by climate zone. It is divided into educational and experiential spaces to enable visitors to better understand the value of wetlands. The center also organizes various exhibitions, cultural events, and international conferences on climate change and other global issues.

The Undercurrent Garden is usually used as a sporting facility and a grassy area where visitors can rest and relax. It also features a flooding prevention system. The Bridge of Dream connects the main expo venue with the International Wetland Center. The environmentally friendly unmanned PRT (person rapid transport) streetcar can be used to visit Suncheonman Bay from the main expo venue. Operating along the 4.6 kilometers course between the main expo venue and Suncheonman Bay, the PRT is constructed using a minimum amount of structures, is electric powered and has very little noise pollution.

ODONGDO ISLAND
Odongdo Island (오동도)

Originally, it was an island, but now having installed the bulwarks of Yeosu Port all the way to Odongdo Island (오동도), visitors can simply walk along the breakwater. There are 70 species of wild flowers that flourish here, a hill commemorating the plantation of the very first tree and a spacious grassy field making this place great for ecological education.

The Odongdo Island of Yeosu is one of the most spectacular spots to appreciate camelias. The camelias on Odongdo Island begin to bloom in November and color the entire island in scarlet until April the following year. Indeed, during this period the entire island looks like a huge camelia blossom. The promenade that stretches across the entire island is popular with couples. You can have fresh catches from the sea prepared for your meal.

GEUMODO ISLAND
Geumodo 미역널바위

The cruise terminal is packed with the visitors and hikers going to the Bireonggil road. Geumodo Island is about 40km south of the Yeosu city. The Jikpo Beach is not really deep, so it's the best choice for family with children. Also the pine tree forest older than 300 years is making a great shade and beautiful scenery.
Geumodo Island Maebongsan Mountain
Geumodo Island is designated as 'an island of mountain hiking'. The hiking route is about 4 hours long and good to enjoy the walking through the woods of camellia trees, pine trees and Korean hornbeam trees.Geumodo Island Bireonggil Road is a 8.5km course along the coast starting from a mountain trail in the back of the Hamgumi Village.

The advantage of the Geumodo mountain hiking is that you can enjoy camellia flowers and views of Dadohaehaesang National Park. Visitors can see the Yeosu coastal sea, Gaedo Island, Sado Island, Dongsando Island and many other beautiful island from the ridge of the mountain.
Mt. Maebong

Mt. Maebong

If you want to enjoy the camellia flowers, take the Geombawi course. And if you want to go around 7~8 main peaks including Mt. Maebongsan, Kalibong and Oknyeobong, take the Ridge course from the Hamgumi.

The most popular place among the visitors is the coastal road. Recently they connected the roads from 'Hamgumi' which is in the center of the island to 'Wusil in Wuhak-ri', which is now 14km long. And also one of the advantages of hiking Maebongsan Mountain is that every hiking course has the direct way to the villages of the island, so you can come down anytime you want.
