After taking a couple cups of coffee, they could have woken up.   Now, it's time to wake up and smell the coffee and go trekking in the valley. When???

    How to get there:
There are buses to Mt. Yumyung from the Chengpyung Bus Terminal four times a day that take roughly 2 hours. If we take the 10:40 bus at the bus termnal, we can reach the park visitor center at about 12:30. This park of Yumyung begins at the entrance gate of the mountain; the top of the foothill is about one hour walk from the entrance.

    How to Visit:
Unless you have your own hiking boots, it doesn't matter. Please try to find a pair of old athletic shoes. You can walk on the mossy rocks/stones or walk through the shallow waters with your lower body under water. There are also swimming courses to cross the stream. You should carry your backpack with its contents waterproofed and wrapped in a plastic.

This trail may be postponed or canceled due to inclement weather. In case we are 25 or more, we can get there by a charter bus.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Dear MTT members:
Summer brings early dawns and late sunsets.
Is too much computer work injuring your eyes too much? Is your belly pushing hard against the buttons of the shirt you are wearing? Don't strain yourself trying to think of the answer. Here is the answer.

Mt. Yumyong is a lovely mountain east of Seoul, less than 2 hours on the bus from Chungpyong Bus Terminal, about 10 minute walk away from Chungpyong Station. Get off at Chungpyong Station and walk northward to ChungPyong Bus Terminal, lined with shops, restaurants, and cafes. Here’s the good news for the visitors to this Chungpyong Station. There is no stairwell which leads up to street level from platform. This station is just 2 years old, situated adjacent to attractive mountains, valleys, and rivers to visit. As you may know(Allangamolla 알랑가몰라), lots of visitors depend on this train station to get from place to place. After roughly 10 minute walk from this station, you'll find the ChungPyong Bus Terminal, You can get the Bus Tickets from the ticket office and hop on the 10:40 bus to Mt. Youmyong. Get off at Mt. Youmyong and follow the lovely trails that lead through the woods. Hikers of any age will enjoy it.

During our hike leafy trees can protect us from sunburn and skin-cancer risk by providing the wonderful shade for us. Even if it is a hot sunny day, we may not be able to look up at the bright sunlight. So, you don't need to worry about the risk of overexposure to the sunlight. All visitors to this mountain and valley can expect to walk and sit in the shade provided by leafy trees. Some people may say that lying at the beach is better than working in the office or staying at home. But walking in the shade, with occasional baths and showers in inground pools, will top lying at the beach, I bet.
This trail has a height requirement. You should be at least four feet tall to join this trail. Why?  Because ...
In the valley of this mountain, you don't need to walk into the stream quietly and secretly in order to avoid being noticed like a teenager sneaking out of his or her home at night to visit his girlfriend or her boyfriend.
This trail reaches a height of 2,880 feet (864M) above sea level. But the popularity of this trail has soared to the height of 1,000,000 feet height above sea level. So it would be the height of stupidity not to join us for this trail.
Everyone participating in this trail has to follow the dress code:
What to Wear & What Not To!
You're heading off for a Summer day trip to valley? Listed below are some of the items you'll want to bring with you, as well as some you want to avoid.
    Quick-drying shorts
Nylon shorts are perfect. What you need to look for is a fabric that will dry quickly. You want to be able to get splashed, jump in the water, and yet still have dry shorts at lunch or early dinner. Your day will be a lot more comfortable that way.
What you don't want: Jean cut-offs!
    Cotton T-shirt
On cold weather trips a cotton T-shirt is the last thing you'd want, but on a summer trip it's a great way to keep cool and keep from getting burned by the sun. If you're sitting on the rocks and get too hot, you can just dip your shirt in the water and put it on—instant comfort!
What you don't want: Extremely heavy cotton t-shirts with low-hanging sleeves that would make it difficult to swim.
    Old athletic shoes
Old athletic shoes are great on the river. They stay on your feet when you're swimming and they offer more foot protection than sandals. No matter what kind of sneaker you wear, make certain you've broken them in before your trip so as to avoid getting blisters.
What you don't want: Flip-flops or boots!
    Hat with a brim
Whether it's a ball cap or a wide brim sun hat, you've got to wear a hat on your river or valley trip. As we all know, protecting yourself from the sun is very important. A hat will keep your face, ears and scalp out of the harsh rays.
What you don't want: A skullcap or no hat at all!
    Sunglasses
Just like when you're snow skiing, you've got to protect your eyes from glare. Wearing good sunglasses is key to avoiding sun-damaged eyes (make sure they provide UVA/UVB protection). Make sure you also have a retention strap like Chums or Croakies attached to your glasses so you aren't at risk of losing them.
What you don't want: To depend on your hat to provide sun protection for your eyes.
Swimming Goggles are recommended for the river or valley trip.
    Sunscreen
This is the single most important thing to wear on your valley trip. There's nothing worse than having a great day on the river, then suffering through the next day with a blistering sunburn. Besides, studies show that each sunburn raises your cancer risk (especially every sunburn before age 18). Do yourself a favor and slather on the sunscreen. Make sure to get one that's at least SPF 30. When you're applying it, don't forget your ears and neck. And if you're not wearing a hat (God forbid!), make sure you put sunscreen on your hair part as well!
    .... please wait ...

Thanks, Steve! I look forward to doing this hike! I have one other question though: are hiking shoes not preferable to old tennis shoes? Or are the old tennis shoes just for walking in the water? Do you suggest we bring both? I'm imagining doing the hike in wet shoes and it seems a little uncomfortable.

We start at the trailhead for the ridgeline and hike uphill for about one and a half hours to the peak of the Mt. Youmyung to view the scenice beauty. Then, we go down the trail leading into Youmyung Valley. It usually takes about 4 hours to the trail tail. So, hiking shoes are required... Hiking shoes are not necessary for those who want to enjoy their time in the valley, taking a walk around.. How nice of you to ask that question.. thanks. Jenny Chong.

Hi Mr. Hong, I am from Suwon. Can I come directly at My. Yumyoung instead of coming at seoul n taking bus ?

  • Richard Ryu
I strongly belive Mr.Hong. He will lead us to the cool and deep valley instead of going scorching top of the mountain. Mr.Hong you are the best of the best!^^
